Fractions

The time has come for us to get our teeth into fractions and I must say that Orange Class have taken to the challenge like champions! We have all been working incredibly hard to get our heads around this tricky concept.

To help us, we have been talking about 'equal' and 'unequal' parts and decided that something can only be described as a fraction if it is an equal part. We then went on to splitting play-doh into certain numbers of equal parts and learned that something split into 2 equal parts is in 'halves' whereas if it is in 4 equal parts it is in 'quarters'.

Take a look at us getting hands on with our play doh - perhaps you could make your own and your children can show you some different ways to show halves and quarters? As a challenge, we asked the children to make play-doh sausages which were half the length of objects (e.g. a ruler) so go ahead and challenge them even further if needed!

The recipe I used for play-doh is here...

I found it was great to not have to cook it, but it won't last as long as a recipe using cream of tartar, you may want to keep your home batch longer than we do in school.
